about
This was written by me in the summer of 2010, and premiered in April 2011 by the fabulous choir at Lake Forest College at the Gorton Center of Lake Forest.
lyrics
Evening
Rainer Maria Rilke, 1926
The evening slowly changes clothes,
Held for it by a row of ancient trees.
You watch: and in your view, the land divides in two:
One goes to heaven, one falls,
And leaves you in between
Not quite as dark as the silent, empty houses,
But also not invoking eternity
Like a star that rises every night
You are left (unraveling unspeakably)
With your life, so immense, so full of fear,
So that—sometimes constrained, sometimes boundless—
It is alternately a stone in you, and a star
